Reviewers Comments: This 24-page activity booklet provides an overview of local foods systems at a level understandable by children ages 9-11. Topics include seasonal eating, California agriculture products, farmers, farming, farmers’ markets, and how food travels from farm to table. Activities include listing which fruits and vegetables are grown in each season, interviewing friends and family about food, looking around you own community for fruits and vegetables being grown, interviewing a farmer at a farmers’ market and more. Educators in states other than California may be able use the information and format to create a similar resource specific to their state. Children have the option of coloring and cutting out small “trophies”, which they can glue to the booklet pages when they have completed each activity. There are no recipes included in this booklet and no nutrition facts panels. It is unnecessary to have a background in nutrition to use this booklet. According to the Web site, “Qualifying community organizations in California can request copies”, but other organizations may print their own copies from the PDFs online. Assessment materials are not included with this booklet.
