Pilot Testing: A total of 99 pilot store tours were held in 32 locations across the country, reaching approximately 470 low-income parents. Feedback was highly positive from both participants and facilitators. Roughly 97% of responding participants indicated that they liked or really liked the tour. On average, participants reported that their confidence in performing key skills taught on the tour, like comparing unit prices, reading food labels, and identifying WIC foods, increased by 22-34% depending on the skill. In addition, three quarters of participants who took part in follow-up interviews 6-8 weeks after the tour indicated that they now use their WIC benefits differently than they did before the tour. Tour planners and facilitators were highly satisfied with the Shopping Matters for WIC Parents guide, with 73% of planners and 69% of facilitators indicating the guide was very helpful.

Reviewers Comments: Shopping Matters for WIC Parents is a guide to help educators lead a tour of a grocery store. It’s part of national nonprofit Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters program. The guide helps educators teach about budgeting, reading food labels, finding whole grains, comparing unit prices, and buying produce. The information presented in this facilitator guide is research-based and current. It is written at a proper level for adults and contains helpful graphics.

The guide is organized and easy to follow. It starts with information on how to plan a grocery store tour, including choosing a store, recruiting participants, encouraging participation, addressing barriers to participation, and choosing a date and time. The next section gives group facilitation tips such as example questions, discussion ideas, talking points, and activities to help reinforce messages. The guide also includes resources and checklists for the facilitator, and handouts and recipes for the group. All of the recipes are low-cost and consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Each includes the Nutrition Facts panel, serving size, and recipe yield.

Some additional materials may be needed to conduct the activities, including name tags, pens, and clipboards.
