It can be used with participants in combination with other resources as a teaching tool or as a stand alone resource. It can also be distributed to families to use in their homes, or as a token of appreciation to volunteers and others who contribute to an existing nutrition education program.
The “Healthy & Homemade” calendar each month features a healthy recipe that a whole family can enjoy and prepare together. Recipes are appropriate for both the seasoned and the inexperienced cook, with clear instructions and simple words used to describe the food preparation process. Food safety is incorporated into the recipe steps, making it a great reinforcement of food safety lessons. Recipes include seasonal, low cost, readily available and culturally acceptable ingredients. Most of the recipes can be made quickly and easily, with basic equipment and appliances. The recipes were all analyzed used Nutritionist Pro and include nutritional information in the form of the familiar Nutrition Facts panel, which will help participants practice label reading skills.
In addition to recipes, users of the calendar will learn new ways to increase physical activity with monthly fitness tips and a daily and monthly fitness record. Daily physical activity can be written in a small box next to each day, totaled and recorded in a designated space at the bottom of the month’s page. Another designated space on each month’s page asks users to add up the number of days they were active.
To enhance each recipe, high-quality photos are both eye-catching and enticing. The page layout design is simple and uncluttered, with easy to read font. There is space on the back cover to include local program information. This calendar can be a worthwhile tool to help families and individuals implement new eating and exercise behaviors.
