In the second grade curricula, students learn to eat a variety of healthy foods from MyPyramid for good health. They are taught that healthy bodies come in all sizes and shapes, to dispel any body image myths, and learn food safety, physical activity and some media literacy skills. Lessons also include a family newsletter that can be copied and sent home to help families make healthy choices. Students who complete all lessons will meet six National Health Education Standards for Grades K-4.
There are seven total lessons in this curriculum. The first lesson is an overview of MyPyramid, and each of the subsequent lessons are based around a specific food group. The final lesson is a review of all food groups. Each lesson includes knowledge and behavioral objectives, core and additional activities, handouts teacher references and advance preparation directions, a supply list, and a review of the previous lesson. The lessons are all a variation of the game “I Spy”, with children being prompted to select a food from the food group that is the focus of the lesson. Lessons are designed to be 30 minutes to 1 hour long to prepare and teach, but make be shorter or longer. The actual time varies based on how many of the core and additional activities are used. In general, lessons in this curriculum are shorter than others in the Show Me series. Food safety is incorporated into some of the lessons, with activities like “I Spy Dirt on a Potato” and “I Spy Safe Milk, I Spy Spoiled Milk”. Handouts from Fight BAC! Are included. Children can also be taught proper hand washing procedures during tasting activities. Students completing this second grade curriculum will gain a solid background of food and nutrition knowledge, and prepare them for a future of healthy eating.
