Reviewers Comments: Eating Habits of Members of the Somali Community was ensued following six group discussions held between January 15 and February 8, 2005 with 80 members of a Somali community in Maine. The purposes of the discussions were to identify nutrition behaviors and attitudes among the Somali population, to determine their nutritional needs and concerns, and to discover the impact of western culture and traditions on their eating behavior and nutritional health. Results of the discussions are categorized into specific topic areas: meal times, foods most commonly eaten at meal times, foods and products not consumed, foods unavailable for purchase, nutrition habits during pregnancy, children and nutrition, balanced eating and nutrition exercise, using their monthly benefit, and gender roles. Following these discussion results are additional sections including similar findings, conclusion, recommendations, glossary of terms and references. This document would be beneficial to anyone working with participants who are Somali or are interested in learning more about patterns of eating in the Somali community.
