|Description:||This resource kit was designed for community members interested in establishing and maintaining a community coalition to help improve the health of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligible children and their families. The kit is divided into eight sections. The first section, "Getting Started" includes: an Introduction, First Five Meetings at a Glance, Using a Community Approach, Conducting a Community Assessment, Assembling a Coalition, Group Leadership, Facilitating Tips, and Planning for Successful Meetings. The next five sections are "Meetings Guides" for initiating a coalition and include: Sample Agendas, Notes for Leaders, Presentation Notes and Overheads, and worksheets and handouts that relate to the meeting topic. The next section is titled "Maintaining Momentum" and includes; Sample Agenda for Future Meetings, Successful Group Process, Charting Your Progress: Evaluation, Coalition Activity Report, Project Funding and a Sample Grant. The last section "Resources" includes: Policy, Advocacy, and Action Resource, Nutrition and Physical Activity Resources, Body Image and Self-Esteem Resources, Fundraising Resources.
A primary focus of the material is on building a team, inspiring change, and setting goals and strategies. Meetings are designed to last about two hours and meet every 3-5 weeks. Tips are provided throughout with samples from established coalition project members.

|Reviewers Comments: ||This well organized and comprehensive kit provides extensive background information on planning and developing a coalition, detailed suggestions for facilitating meetings and accurate research based education components. The meeting guides allow for flexibility to meet the skills and needs of different coalitions and their members. For example, it is suggested that smaller coalitions modify the existing format. Most of the research and resources are specific to California. The kit promotes a positive approach to childhood overweight. Topics and video are culturally sensitive. Authors recommend and provide guidelines for conducting a community assessment and for process and outcome evaluations.|
